• Dr. Alex Pattakos is a columnist for PA TIMES Online, a premier source of public administration and public policy thought leadership. His column focuses on the topic of "Meaning in Government" and how the search for meaning, which the world-renowned psychiatrist Viktor Frankl called the "primary intrinsic motivation of human beings," influences the discipline and practice of public administration. Besides sharing illustrations of "meaning at work" in government service, public policy formulation, and program implementation, the column addresses both conceptual and practice issues related to public administration education and workforce development, as well as succession/retirement planning and career transitions, across government levels, jurisdictions, and functions. PA TIMES is the flagship magazine of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), the largest and most prominent professional association dedicated to advancing the art, science, teaching and practice of public and non-profit administration. As the leading interdisciplinary public service organization, ASPA's mission also includes: promoting the value of joining and elevating the public service profession; building bridges among all who pursue public purposes at home and internationally; providing networking and professional development opportunities to those committed to public service values; and achieving innovative solutions to the challenge of governance.
